
As one of your Conservative MEPs, I go to Brussels to speak up for British interests, and for the people of the East of England. I do not see it as my role to promote the EU. I want us to govern our own country. Currently (late June 2008) my focus is on: opposing the Treaty of Lisbon and campaigning for a referendum; child welfare issues; energy security; and pressing for 'EU funding' for flood defences in Suffolk. On Wednesday 11th June Geoffrey Van Orden hosted the first Conference for victims of terrorism in the European Parliament. Victims from around the world met together to share their experiences, and to help lay the foundations for a global organisation for survivors. Sixth formers across the East of England have recently been giving their views on the best future for Britain's relationship with Europe. On 27 February, we launched an essay competition, asking the question: What sort of relationship with Europe would be best for Britain in the first half of the 21st century? First prize includes a week in Brussels shadowing Geoffrey Van Orden in his work at the European Parliament, with travel, hotel, meals and sight-seeing. Judges include the best-selling novelist Frederick Forsyth. Entries are now being judged and the result will be out soon. Geoffrey Van Orden has been leading action across the East of England against imposition of the revived EU Constitution. If passed, the new Treaty will massively shift more power to Brussels.
